1896 - Athens
Paris 1892 : Pierre de Coubertin proposed the revival of the Olympic Games. 1894 : the IOC was constituted and, at a Congress held in Paris, Athens was officially chosen to host the Games. On 6 April 1896, James Connolly (USA) became the first Olympic triple jump champion of the modern era. During the Games, in which only men were allowed to compete, Spyridon Louis, a Greek shepherd, won the marathon, while the Olympic Hymn was heard for the first time.
At the first modern Olympic Games, Switzerland had no official delegation, and was represented by Neuchâtel gymnast Louis Zutter, who accompanied the German team. He alone took three of the “crowns” that the two countries claimed. The Feuille d’Avis de Neuchâtel newspaper reported that he had “received a large diploma and a magnificent medal, and was invited to a dinner for the winners by the King of Greece”. Other Swiss gymnasts triumphed before 1939: Georges Miez (eight medals between 1924 and 1936) and Basle’s Eugen Mack. In Lausanne, Jean Tschabold (1952), a high school gymnastics teacher at the Gymnase de la Cité, is also remembered for winning a silver team medal.
